Sam M. Hwang is the founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of the New Pathway Education & Technology Group, based in China. He launched the test-preparatory academy in 2009 in order to help students prepare for a number of standardized tests, including the SAT, SSAT, TOEFL, and AP exams. He also developed New Pathway Consulting, a boarding school, college, and graduate school counseling service. Sam M. Hwang also bought two ReadingTown branches in Shanghai and developed a new school for teaching English to students in kindergarten through sixth grade, which he called Scholar Tree.
Prior to establishing his business in China, Sam M. Hwang served as a Technical Specialist with Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner LLP in Cambridge, Massachusetts, while he attended school at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). As a Technical Specialist, he belonged to the Mechanical Practice Group and drafted and prosecuted patents. He gained a great deal of expertise relevant to the biotechnology, mechanical, and electro-mechanical fields while working with client companies, including Boston Scientific, LG, and Toshiba Corporation.
Sam M. Hwang spent seven years at MIT in pursuit of two degrees. At the same time, he was employed by the university in various capacities. He functioned as a Research Assistant with the MIT Department of Materials Science and MIT Media Lab, where he raised money for the lab by writing grant applications. In addition, Sam M. Hwang worked on genetic-engineering technologies as a Research Assistant with MIT’s Biological Engineering Lab and as a Teaching Assistant for the class The Structural Basis of Genetic Material: Nucleic Acids. He later became affiliated with Harvard University, where he served as an Intern at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society through Harvard Law School.
